PHOTO TOUR:
PROPOSED METRO EXTENSION FROM
HOPKINS HOSPITAL TO CANTON

Hopkins Hospital is the current eastern terminus of Baltimore's Metro Subway, shown by the skylight oblisk in the Broadway median. It's very attractive, but as a terminal transit station, it utterly fails because of its lack of feeder bus access.

  1. Wait a minute! Where did this metro extension proposal come from? I thought the MTA had its own proposal taking the line northeast? Canton would be served by the 'red line'.

Has anyone seen the latest red line alternatives? One has it underground or on its own right of way all the way out to security blvd. check it out! http://www.baltimoreregiontransitplan.com/images/mapzoom/may06workshops/alternative8a8b.htm

  2. Yes, I've seen the Red Line alternatives. There's no way the MTA is going to build the max-subway alternative. It's way too expensive, as Secretary Flanagan keeps pointing out.

My Metro extension plan is cheap, fast and has great connections!!!! - almost all on the surface.

  3. Secretary Flanagan's days are numbered. O'malley or Duncan need to make two promises; underground red-line and and (mont./PG County) purple line by 2012. We have the money, we just need a governor who's willing to do what is needed.

Gov Bob's days are numbered, we need to start holding both O'Mally and Duncan accountable.

  4. Where are we going to get the money for an underground Red Line, Abeschenck? All three governor candidates support the multi-billion InterCounty Connector as a high priority project, which is sapping the State's transportation budget. Ehrlich has shown at least as much support for transit in Baltimore as O'Malley has, which is not to say enough.

  5. It is not a matter of finding the money to do it. The money to do these types of projects is all ready here, there just needs to be an organized effort to take the reins of government . We need to say to O'Malley and Duncan that they need to have a bidding war over the red line and Baltimore transit projects in general. They need to take their campaign promises higher and higher.

Look, when the Olympics were supposedly coming to Baltimore/Washington there was nothing but enthusiasm and no one doubted that the legislature would grant the project a blank check. We need to make Baltimore transit an issue for everyone in this state.

    Three points:

1.)Baltimore needs this the repair itself. Look at other similarly sized cities and what do they have that we do not? Boston's 'T' and DC's Metro are critical in those cities resurgence.

    2) Containing Sprawl - Baltimore's suburban counties have vested interested in creating a strong Baltimore, lest they should see urban crime, congestion and other problems surge into ther communities.

    3) Commuters - The Red Line needs to be built all the way to Ellicott City, using the unused right of way parallel to CSX's old 'B&O Main Line' and extend all the way to Dundalk and Essex on the east. The Green Line needs to expand out all the way out to Belair. Finally, the Yello Line has to be built, ASAP, linking Columbia and Towson to the network.

Sure, this will cost money but it is long over due. If your house has a leaky roof it only gets leakier as the years go by. We have ignored it for too long. It's time to break the bank.
